The fundamental challenge faced by electric vehicles — range anxiety — is less of an issue with hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. To keep your batteries charged and your motors fueled, a fuel cell generates power aboard. While the technology may not have as much public interest as the rising trend of battery-electric automobiles, Toyota and other firms have demonstrated that hydrogen-powered passenger cars have at least some potential. Hyundai has been actively seeking to instigate a hydrogen wave in its global vehicle portfolio. The Vision FK has the top spot on this list of possible hydrogen products. Hyundai has a history of introducing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, such as the ix35 Fuel Cell and, more recently, the NEXO.


Korean automaker Hyundai has announced the next step in its enormous campaign to expand the usage of fuel cells throughout the world. Furthermore, to catch our eye, it has debuted a concept automobile with battery and electronics components sourced from Rimac. (Hyundai owns 12 percent of Rimac Automobili). Since the FK seems to be based on an already existing car, the FK seems more than imaginable.

Hyundai recently stated its desire to commercialize hydrogen fuel and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2040. While Hyundai’s plans to accomplish this goal include far-fetched concepts such as an autonomous tractor-trailer capable of traveling more than 600 miles between fuel stops, an autonomous off-road-ready rescue vehicle (dubbed RHGV) capable of providing power to vehicles in need of emergency assistance in remote areas, and an autonomous flying rescue vehicle capable of fighting fires and extricating trapped passengers. Additionally, it displayed a number of cars that seem more based in reality, like a mobile hydrogen station and, our personal favorite, the Vision FK design.


The Hyundai Vision FK produces approximately 680hp and can accelerate from 0 to 100 in less than four seconds. The range would be roughly 600 kilometers. A fuel cell system is advantageous for consistent output and rapid refueling. Additionally, the fuel-cell stack and tank are lighter than a large battery when combined. However, it requires a battery to buffer its power during the maximum acceleration peaks.

It is not a plug-in hybrid in the usual sense. The dual electric motors and battery pack were designed in collaboration with Rimac, and the Vision FK’s powertrain can be recharged via the wall for a limited length of battery-only range. When that figure is exceeded, the hydrogen fuel cell kicks in, supplying energy via two onboard hydrogen tanks and a fuel cell stack. Additionally, it has a range of more than 370 miles between fill-ups (or electric top-ups).


The Hyundai Vision FK may have some futuristic technologies. However, its look is unmistakably that of a sporty two-door coupe.

Even with a disguise that comprises an entire bodysuit, the Vision FK’s look resembles the Kia Stinger (both are made by the same business) albeit it has only two doors and a pair of air intakes immediately next to each rear wheel arch. Additionally, the grille and front bumper design seem to make reference to the Kia Stinger. Although the headlights have clearly been modified a bit.

Albert Biermann, Hyundai Group’s R&D leader, explained that the group’s existing EV lineup features batteries optimized for long-range rather than instantaneous high power. As a result, he went to Rimac for both that component of the system and the electronics. The battery can be recharged, allowing the car to operate even when there is no hydrogen available. Rimac was in charge of the electric drive segments and onboard battery, while Hyundai was in charge of the fuel cell and hydrogen tanks. 


We see the Vision FK being produced by Hyundai by 2040 as a credible expectation, taking into account Hyundai’s prior experience with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like the Nexo. The introduction of the Vision FK into the U.S. market looks to be delayed by the country’s insufficient hydrogen infrastructure. While it’s true that things may be different by 2040 if hydrogen gains ground in the meantime, it may also be developed in the following 18 years.
