The new Bentley Continental GT Speed may be helping to bring an end to a golden age of large gas engines with similarly enormous personalities; but its legacy is about more than just power and excess. It is one of the British automaker’s most enduring successes; the W12 engine, which has sold over 100,000 units since 2003. The new 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed is not only an above-average Bentley. It’s quite possibly the ultimate modern gran Turismo.

It’s everything you’d expect from a Bentley coupe: huge, fast, luxurious, and lush (the ride characteristics in Comfort and Bentley modes are comparable to those of the standard W12 coupe); a car that can easily travel 1,000 miles in a day and leave you feeling peaceful and comfortable at the end. The electronic limited-slip differential on the 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed is the first of its sort on a Bentley road vehicle. A new carbon-ceramic braking system with 10-piston callipers and large 17.3-inch front rotors; the largest ever fitted to a road car, and according to Bentley it is an option.

The new 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed weighs little more than 5,000 pounds and gives 650 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, making it a weight-to-power ratio above standard for a Bentley. Even among performance automobiles, Bentley’s twelve-cylinder engine is becoming increasingly rare. Its 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine produces 650 horsepower from 5,000 to 6,000 RPM and 664 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 6,000 rpm in GT Speed configuration. As a result, the coupe takes 3.5 seconds to reach 60 mph and the convertible takes 3.6 seconds, and both Continentals reach a top speed of 208 mph.

It has the same ZF eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive as the previous Continental GT models, with a few Speed improvements. In Sport mode, gearshifts appear to be twice as quick – not that they were ever sluggish before – and the car sends more power to the rear axle more of the time. The 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed makes an impact and this early-build car, not yet approved for road usage and it has the optional carbon-ceramic stoppers. The brake pedal moves easily for a short distance until the 10-piston calipers up front clamp down on the rotors with head-snatching intensity. Smooth stops at low speeds are difficult; perhaps on the track, with a little heat, they’ll feel better.

The 2022 Continental GT Speed has a top speed of 208 mph, and it feels capable of every bit of that, judging by its grip on Silverstone’s long straights. It whooshes into triple digits with ease, accompanied by a velvety snarl from an engine that doesn’t appear to break a sweat. In Sport mode, the dual-clutch eight-speed transmission shifts gear twice as quickly as in previous Bentleys, amplifying the GT Speed’s single burst of thrust.

The Bentley V8 may have a sense of urgency, but it lacks the personality of this twelve-cylinder. The W12 throbs and gurgles through creamy custard-like tectonic judders, gutters from the sports exhaust tamped down in Comfort mode but let loose in Sport like the unruly upper classes.

Other fast cars lose their capacity to cosset when mechanically urged into more aggressive performance. After all, it’s easier to change the entire experience: everything becomes firmer, and every drive mode becomes louder. The fact that the Continental GT Speed’s Comfort and Bentley settings are so recognizable is what sets it unique.

The 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed feels utterly unlike any other Continental GT ever created around the corners, and it’s obvious from entry to apex to exit. The original Conti GT was constructed on a front-wheel-drive basis that it shared with the Volkswagen Phaeton. The car was lightning fast between bends, but with 58 percent of its weight on the front axle, corner entry required extreme precision and patience with the throttle.

The front fender vents feature the number 12 in tribute to what’s under the hood, while the side sills are unique to the Speed. The wheels are a distinctive 22-inch Speed design in dazzling silver with the option of a dark tint or gloss black finish. When you choose the latter, the Continental Blackline Specification turns all chrome exterior trim black, including the headlamp and taillight surrounds, except for the Speed emblems.

Some features distinguish the GT Speed from its Continental predecessors. The Speed badging on the front fenders, dark mesh for the grilles, twin oval tailpipes, and a new sports sill design are the most noticeable features, but there’s also Speed badging on the front fenders, dark mesh for the grilles, and a new sports sill design. With a specific Speed color split and matching embroidery, Speed tread plates, and a Speed fascia logo, additional Alcantara has been used on the inside.

With numerous colour combinations available for this amazing car, it’s easy to get lost in the possibilities while choosing one. Vibrant colors, on the other hand, are the most effective(a stunning take on British racing green), Julep (a shade of yellow that shifts depending on the light), and Orange Flame. The latter works well, but Candy Red and Verdant Green brought out the best of the Speed’s contours and features, adding a sense of elegant ferocity to the dark-tinted grille and chrome Speed badging.

The touchscreen is responsive to pinch and swipe actions and works well. It also includes Apple CarPlay, Sirius satellite radio, and built-in navigation with Google StreetView, Google Earth, and Google POI search, among other features. It contains two ‘kinaesthetic shakers’. Unlike typical subwoofers, which just convert certain audio frequencies into vibrations, these shakers vibrate the front seats, making music more than just an auditory but also a sensuous experience.

Buyers can specify any of the traditional aid systems, although the Speed comes standard with many of them. A top-view camera, traffic sign recognition, pedestrian alert, automated city braking, auto-dimming mirrors, and hands-free trunk operation are all included in the standard City Specification. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and a night-vision camera are included in the optional Touring Specification.

The manufacturer is introducing drive mode-based ESC for the first time. Sport’s settings are dialled in for more enthusiasm, rather than a single set of overarching electronic controls that apply to each mode. You can even turn it off completely with a quick push of the ESC button; this is a Bentley you can drift or do donuts in.

While the convertible’s pricing is not yet determined, but the 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed will start at $274,900.
