Subaru debuted with the new Subaru WRX 2022 and comes with a new powertrain, reworked styling, and an expanded model range that now includes a performance-oriented GT variant.

The new GT specification, this time with the typical premium and limited packages, adds electronic dampers, adjustable driving mode settings, and exclusive Recaro seats. Subaru has not yet revealed pricing for the new WRX, but it is expected to go on sale in early 2022.

The new car gets some fundamental changes from the previous model. While the new engine is a bit disappointing, the WRX 2022 runs on the Subaru Global Platform, which brings some improvements. The new trim level WRX GT introduces for the first time an adaptive chassis for a WRX, complements Recaro Sports seats at the front and 19-inch light-alloy wheels in grey.

Subaru claims a 28 percent increase in torsional stiffness and a 75 percent increase in suspension stiffness with the new platform. According to Subaru, the structure is 28 percent stiffer (75 percent more stable at each suspension point) than the WRX 2021, as well as improved by the longer suspension travel. A new dual-part electric power steering system will also be introduced, which will provide Subaru with a quicker response to driver input and a more natural driving experience.

At Thermal Club Raceway in Palm Springs, California, I had the privilege to experience the new adaptive shock absorbers while a ride with the former F1 and current Subaru rally driver Scott Speed. In the end, I was driving with professional racer Scott with a shotgun when he used the new Subaru WRX 2022 in full speed on the 1.7-mile desert circuit of the Thermal Club, bounced off the curb, and drove into braking zones that I thought would pick up gravel and hair. The introduction to the track was meant to marvel at static cars in crowded rooms, but instead, I was allowed to drive at speed as he embarked on illuminated hot laps in the WRX manual and WRX-CVT, testing the gearbox and radiators on a 100-degree afternoon.

The fifth-generation Subaru WRX with all-wheel drive may seem familiar at first glance, but Subaru has made some changes to improve its performance and provide more power.

The 2022 WRX features a new GT top-spec offering electronically controlled dampers tailored to dynamic performance and driver preferences, as well as comfort in both normal and sporty settings. Subaru has optimized the chassis ex-works, and the WRX GT has a new adaptive suspension with comfort and standard/sports settings. New to the new WRZ 2022 is the most advanced performance feature in its 20-year history, with a new automatic transmission – the Subaru Performance transmission is now standard – at the forefront of standard equipment.

The GT model gets electronic dampers and a dizzying number of driver controls. As one of the few remaining rally-inspired cars, the Subaru WRX maintains a firm grip on the hearts of many enthusiasts and will undergo an extensive redesign in 2022, introducing a new continuously variable four-wheel drive and turbocharged sedan. In fact, Subaru claims there are 430 different customization options for the WRX GT model, from driver electronic dampers to steering-wheel drive adjustability, among others.

This article/content follows in the footsteps of the long-running Solterra SUV, the 2022 WRX being built for the first time on the Subaru Global Platform with handling aids with a stiffer chassis and a lower center of gravity. With a tablet-style 11,6-inch Subaru Starlink (r) high-definition multimedia system and the latest generation of EyeSight (R) driver assistance technology. In its 20-year history the new Subaru WRX 2022 combines the most advanced features delivering more performance, technology, and safety. The biggest change in the all-new Subaru Wrx 2022 is the fifth generation of the rally legend Subie, switching from the Impreza compact car to the three-row Ascent SUV to the global platform of Subaru that supports most automakers with the sole exception of the rear-wheel-drive BRZ sports coupe.

The all-new Subaru WRX 2022 promises improvements over the previous version with the introduction of a new architecture aimed at improving driving dynamics and the addition of a more powerful 271 hp turbo four-cylinder engine. We’ve been behind the wheel, and while we don’t have to comment on the WRX’s performance yet, Subaru claims the cars will drive and improve handling thanks to its new platform. The upscale WRX GT features electronically controlled adaptive dampers to allow the driver to choose between comfort, normal suspension, and sports suspension, the first WRX with 8-way Power Recaro seat cushions with red ultra-suede contrast stitching, Subaru EyeSight Safety package, and standard automatic transmission, while the basic vehicle runs on 18-inch wheels instead of the standard WRXXs 17.

On top of that, the GT model features a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) called Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) with customizable driving modes and Recaro Race seats. Equipped with SPT-developed CVT, the driver can calibrate the drivetrain’s performance with the SI drivetrain, while the GT’s new drive mode selection system offers different driving modes to adjust steering, suspension, and other dynamic settings. In the GT top models, an automatic will be added in the USA in 2022, but not in Canada.
